Jake Paul's mother and father became scared after watching Mike Tyson almost knock out trainer in open training

Jake Paul's mom and dad are confident their son will win all of his fights, but they've never been so scared going into a fight.

The controversial YouTuber-turned-boxer will take on legendary heavyweight champion Mike Tyson on Friday night in the first fight to be broadcast on Netflix. And the pair kicked off fight week festivities with an open workout for fans and media this evening in Irving, Texas.

Undercard fighters warmed up the crowd before Tyson and Paul entered the ring, with the boxing icon impressing in his rounds with Rafael Cordeiro. The social media star's parents watched the action from ringside, standing just a few meters away from the horrific spectacle.

Jake Paul's mother admits she's scared of Mike Tyson fight

A key factor in the lead-up to Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson was the divide between younger and older fans in predicting the fight. More recent pundits point to the Brooklyn native's advanced age (58) and Paul's youth, while more seasoned viewers recall his tenacity in his prime.

Paul's parents, Pam Stepnick and Greg Paul, grew up watching in middle America and were fascinated by Tyson's fearsome punching power. And when Stepnick learned her son would be fighting the legendary boxer, she was admittedly horrified.

Speaking to Bloody Elbow after watching the aging fighter nearly decapitate his trainer with a series of combinations on Tuesday night, she explained: “Seeing Mike Tyson in person is terrifying.

“I watched him grow up, the baddest man on the planet. He was 100 percent scary to watch. Hands down this is the most scared I've ever been going into one of Jake's fights, but I won't stop him!

“I never tell Jake, do I [his brother] Logan, there's something you can't do. I always tell them to do what they are passionate about, manifest and that I believe in them. But you don't want to know what I thought! I think Mike hopefully made this look better than it really was.

“He's a professional, he puts his man on the ropes and makes it look like he's really beating him, okay. I’m not making any predictions, I just hope Jake wins!”

Jake Paul's father is confident he will knock out Mike Tyson – despite his fears

For Jake's father, Greg Paul, this fight is truly a “pinch me” moment in life. He has regularly said that in his early days of watching boxing and MMA, what he most enjoyed was watching Mike Tyson enter the ring.

“I just see Mike, he’s a huge man,” marveled Greg after the open training session. “He’s a bad guy, but Jake’s up for it. He's been training hard, I think Jake will win by TKO, but definitely [this is the most afraid I’ve been going into a fight].

“Anyone Jake fought that hard except Anderson Silva, I would fight on the street. I wouldn't fight Mike Tyson on the street for nothing unless I had a gun or a knife. That wouldn’t happen.”

What is his fondest memory of the legendary heavyweight champion? “Biting the ear off, everyone remembers that,” he laughed. “I've watched Tyson since the beginning because I was born and raised in Cleveland and Mike played a big role here.

“For him to come out with black shorts and black shoes, no music, just pure boxing, it was incredible, he's a huge man and he's amazing.” I hugged him on Logan's podcast and thought, “Holy shit, this guy is solid, man.”

“I'm nervous, it's a fight that could end at any time anyway. I think Jake will stop him, I think it will be a TKO.”
