A drug deal gone bad leads to a deadly shooting in Palm Beach County

A drug deal for marijuana and vape cartridges took a deadly turn after two men allegedly tried to rob a suspected drug dealer who is now charged with murder.

On Oct. 11, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) responded to JFK Medical Center in Atlantis after a man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the right leg that hit a femoral artery, according to a sheriff's office affidavit .

According to the report, the victim was taken to Delray Medical Center due to the severity of his injuries.

The affidavit states that the investigation led to PBSO detectives speaking with the victim's mother, who said she had not spoken to her son, so they used the Find My iPhone application to track down the victim . According to the report, the mother and her daughters found the victim's iPhone near Lantana Road and South Congress Avenue. The affidavit goes on to say that when the phone was found, it found a “blood-like substance” that disturbed her.

The affidavit states that through a search of the iPhone, investigators observed drug transaction text messages in which the victim sought to purchase $2,500 worth of drugs. The affidavit states the agreement was for a pound of marijuana and e-cigarette cartridges.

The investigation led investigators to capture security footage from the JFK Medical Center parking lot where they could see the victim being dropped off at the hospital by a black Scion xB. According to the report, investigators were able to identify the driver of the Scion, who assisted them in the investigation.

The PBSO arrest affidavit states that the witness, the victim and two other people drove through unincorporated Lake Worth Beach to purchase and distribute narcotics. The victim reportedly asked the driver of the black vehicle to go to a location in the area of Lantana and Jog Road so he could conduct a drug transaction. The report goes on to say that when they arrived at the scene, the victim got into a Mercedes and a gunshot was heard shortly after.

The victim quickly exited the Mercedes and jumped into the back of the black Scion, bleeding profusely, the affidavit states.

At 4:16 a.m. Oct. 13, the victim was pronounced dead at Delray Medical Center.

Through phone records, PBSO investigators were able to identify the accused shooter as Dylan Slone of Lake Worth.

The arrest report states that PBSP investigators used aerial surveillance and physical surveillance to monitor him from his home. Slone was seen entering a white shed where he was weighing marijuana for sale and distribution. The report goes on to say that tactical agents observed several bags of marijuana packaged for sale and distribution along with drug scales. Officers also found four to five pounds of marijuana, one pound of mushrooms and numerous THC vape cartridges. Investigators were also able to find a pistol in a bedroom.

After Slone's arrest, investigators were able to review his cell phone records, which led them to another witness who was at the scene the day of the shooting.

According to the report, the witness told investigators that the victim and another witness, who was driving the black Scion, attempted to steal marijuana and vape cartridges from Slone, which resulted in Slone shooting the victim.

Slone was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail where he was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm, possession of marijuana with intent to sell with a weapon, and selling or possessing a substance with a weapon.
