Clay Co. woman charged with murder

MANCHESTER, Ky. (WYMT) – A Clay County mother has been charged with murder in her daughter's death.

On Thursday, November 7, a grand jury returned a superseding murder indictment against Brianna “Morgan” Burkhart.

On April 20, the Department of Community Based Services contacted the Kentucky State Police to investigate a complaint of alleged physical abuse involving a three-month-old girl.

Through the investigation, Burkhart was identified as a suspect in the case.

The child was taken to the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital in Lexington with multiple fractures, retinal hemorrhages and bleeding.

In June, a grand jury indicted Burkhart on three counts of assault – first degree – and one count of criminal abuse – first degree – of a child under 12 years old.

The child died in September at the British Children's Hospital from injuries sustained as a result of the abuse.
