Death of Dane Brown: Man who survived a drug overdose at Democratic donor Ed Buck's apartment was found dead on the sidewalk in South LA

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A man who survived two drug overdoses allegedly supplied by now-jailed former Democratic donor Ed Buck, and whose lawsuit against him was expected to go to trial early next year, was found dead last week.

Jasmyne Cannick, a journalist and friend of Dane Brown, posted on X that Brown's body was found on a sidewalk in South Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Brown, 43, was found dead last Wednesday and his cause of death was listed as deferred pending further testing.

“Dane's death is part of the unseen, undiscussed consequences of Ed Buck's actions – consequences that do not end just because Buck is behind bars,” Cannick wrote. “No one should be found dead on a sidewalk, and neither should Dane.” “I don't deserve this ending.”

Buck, 70, was convicted in federal court in 2021 in the overdose deaths of two other black men – Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean – in his West Hollywood apartment.

Brown's appeal in Los Angeles Superior Court of sexual assault, assault, hate violence, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and human trafficking was expected to be heard in February.

The judge in the civil suit recently granted a request from Buck's attorneys to force Brown to attend a virtual deposition scheduled for next week.

Brown and Buck met on the Adam4Adam website in June 2019, and over the next two months, Buck often sent a rideshare vehicle to a hotel on Skid Row, where Brown was living at the time, to take him to Buck's apartment, the lawsuit says .

After they first arrived at Buck's apartment, the two had sex and Buck provided Brown with methamphetamine for smoking and intravenous use, the lawsuit says. Buck continued to supply Brown with the drug while he lived at Buck's apartment from July to September 2019, the lawsuit says.

Buck, who allegedly sought out Brown because he is black and gay, also forced him to watch pornography, according to the lawsuit.

Buck injected Brown intravenously with methamphetamine on Sept. 4, 2019, and again a week later, causing Brown to overdose both times and requiring hospitalization each time, the lawsuit says.

During the second incident, Buck also administered the “date rape” drug gamma hydroxybutyrate, also known as GHB, to Brown, the lawsuit says.

Buck allegedly refused to call an ambulance, so Brown walked across the street to a gas station, where an employee and a passerby called 911 on his behalf, the lawsuit filed in September 2021 says.

Brown survived both overdoses and testified against Buck during a trial in U.S. District Court, where a jury found Buck guilty in July 2021 of all nine crimes he was charged with, including two counts of distribution violations Methamphetamine resulting in death.

Buck was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in April 2022.

Buck was once a candidate for a seat on the West Hollywood City Council. He donated more than $500,000 to political candidates and causes, most of which were affiliated with the Democratic Party.
