Jake Paul called out Canelo Alvarez before Mike Tyson fought

play

Jake Paul predicts he can knock out Mike Tyson when the two meet in a ring on Friday as the headliner of their Netflix boxing event at AT&T Stadium, and Paul already knows the opponent he wants to call out in the ring if he beats Tyson. For anyone who has been following it over the last year or so, the name should come as no surprise.

“It's Canelo,” Paul explained, referring to boxer Canelo Alvarez during an appearance on the TimboSugarShow podcast with MMA stars Sean O'Malley and Tim Welch, released this week ahead of the Tyson fight.

Alvarez currently holds the WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles and has a career record of 62-2-2 with 39 knockouts. Paul, a YouTube star who has parlayed his fame into a lucrative and increasingly successful boxing career, said it was a battle to determine the “face of boxing”.

Alvarez's trilogy of fights against Gennady Golovkin was among the biggest money-spinners in boxing history. His victory over Billy Joe Saunders in May 2021 was announced as drawing 73,126 spectators at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, breaking the record for the largest indoor crowd at a boxing event in the United States. Muhammad Ali and Leon Spinks drew 63,350 spectators for their rematch at the Superdome in New Orleans in 1978.

“This moment will prove that I am the face of boxing, the biggest attraction,” Paul said of his fight against Tyson, “and me against Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight world championship is the biggest fight, arguably even bigger. “than me against Tyson, and it makes so much sense.”

“Canelo is on the way out,” added Paul, who has a career record of 10-1. “He's going to want a payday and I want to show the world that everything I've been talking about is actually true, beat Canelo and I'll pull off the biggest upset in the history of boxing. We're really going to fight.” Look who the face is, because after this event I will claim it as my own.”

Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez have history

Paul has been trying to set up a fight with Alvarez for some time and none of his approaches have worked so far, although this highly anticipated clash with Tyson will give Paul perhaps the biggest platform yet to convince Alvarez to get in the ring with him .

Alvarez, 34, showed little interest in working with Paul until April last year after the Tyson-Paul duel was first announced. Alvarez had two fights last year, defeating Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision in May and Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision in September.

“I think Netflix is good for boxing, but with this particular fight, I think Netflix is doing something wrong,” Alvarez said in an interview with TMZ when asked about his interest in the Tyson-Paul fight. “Netflix’s involvement (in boxing) is good, but not in this type of fight. I think it’s more of a show than a fight.”

Paul, 27, is boxing against Tyson at heavyweight for the first time and noted on the podcast this week that he eats up to 4,000 calories a day to maintain his weight at around 224 pounds. He hopes the move to the cruiserweight division (200 pounds) will be a compromise that can tempt Alvarez to change his mind.

“He’ll want his, I guess it’ll be his fifth championship in the weight class. He wants the cruiserweight belt,” Paul said. “If everyone remembers, he (Ilunga) wanted to challenge Makabu to become Cruiserweight Champion, so he wants to conquer that division so he can call himself Cruiserweight Champion and that's where the fight comes.” Makes sense because I can't earn 175 (pounds). This fight should be for the belt and it makes the most sense at cruiserweight.”

It won't make sense unless Paul actually beats Tyson, the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion. Here's more information about the fight Paul must win before he can attack Alvarez again:
