Winfield man found dead on 'dream trip' after fire in Canada

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A 77-year-old man from Winfield has died in a fire in Canada.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said an elderly man who was a guest at the Driftwood Motel in Deer Lake was reported missing following the Oct. 19 fire.

Human remains were found on the property Wednesday morning and identified as those of the missing man.

According to an obituary on the Miles Funeral Service website, Eugene Earl “Gene” Spoon, 77, of Wichita, died after a fire at the Driftwood Motel in Deer Lake while on a dream elk hunting trip in Newfoundland, Canada.
