Friend remembers Ms Pat, a woman killed in a knife attack in which four people died

CINCINNATI – An hours-long SWAT standoff ended with police searching a College Hill home and finding three people dead from stab wounds and the suspected attacker seriously injured from apparent self-inflicted wounds.

The suspect, 66-year-old Anthony Mathis, later died at the hospital.

Police identified the victims as 11-year-old Cadence McCollum, 32-year-old DJ McCollum and 78-year-old Patricia McCollum.

Rosemary Oglesby-Henry, founder and CEO of Rosemary's Babies Co., said she couldn't believe the news that Patricia was dead.

“Mrs. Patricia McCollum, but everyone called her Ms. Pat, is an icon,” Oglesby-Henry said. “She is a hero. She advocates for foster children, people with disabilities and teen mothers like the ones we serve.”

Oglesby-Henry said she had known Ms. Pat since she was six years old and was a friend and mentor when Oglesby-Henry became a teenage mother herself.

When the nonprofit expanded to a new location, the Holloway House, Oglesby-Henry named a room after Ms. Pat.

“Leaving a strong legacy for these kids so they can understand that no matter how big the barrier is, you can break that barrier down. Pat McCollum was for her people, and her people were everyone,” she said.

Oglesby-Henry said McCollum has raised about 200 children and adopted more over the years.

She said she was a “ball of fire” who was fun, loved to dance and would “tell you what it was like.”

“She was hard on you because she knew and expected you to be great, and she was hard on you on every level and hard on you and honest with you because she wanted you to do remarkable things,” Oglesby said -Henry.

She said the people she touched will remember her and carry on her legacy of helping children in need.

“She will only be remembered if we remember her for the positive, great things she did, for the extraordinary person she was, and if we continue to say her name: Pat McCollum, for the people said Oglesby-Henry.
