Gas leak in Chennai suspects several students of Tiruvottiyur School have been hospitalized with breathing problems

Over 30 students of a private school in Tiruvottiyur fainted on Friday, allegedly due to a gas leak, triggering widespread panic among students, school officials and parents. The incident occurred at a school on Village Street, prompting immediate evacuation and rescue efforts.

According to a report from Maalaimalar, two students were taken to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital where they are currently in a stable condition. Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as students lost consciousness and were rushed for urgent medical care, causing worried parents to flock to the school.

Over 30 female students reportedly experienced symptoms such as eye irritation and difficulty breathing. The fire department responded quickly and initiated rescue operations to ensure the safety of the affected students.

Initial police investigations suggest the incident may have been caused by a chemical leak from the school's laboratory. However, some reports also suggest that the fumes may have come from a nearby chemical plant. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the leak and monitor the situation to prevent further risks.

In this situation, parents gathered outside the school with some of them having an argument with the school management, accusing them of not providing information regarding the incident, ABP Nadu reported.

The Thiruvotiyur police then rushed to the spot. They are currently interviewing the principal and teachers to learn more about the events that led to the mass hospitalizations.

Last year, an overnight ammonia gas leak at a fertilizer factory in Chennai's Ennore area resulted in at least 52 people being hospitalized. According to officials, the leak originated in a pipeline that ran from the sea to a private fertilizer company's factory. Many of those affected required first aid because of eye irritation and breathing difficulties. Several families have evacuated their homes to avoid the damaging effects of the leak.
