Over ₹1 crore has been raised for the family of Gursimran Kaur, the 19-year-old Walmart employee who died in a walk-in oven

Over 1 crore has been raised for the family of Gursimran Kaur, the 19-year-old Walmart employee who died trapped in a walk-in oven at a branch of the supermarket chain in Canada. The Indian-American teenager's charred remains were found in the Walmart oven on Saturday evening.

Gursimran Kaur and her mother both worked at a Walmart in Halifax, Canada. When Kaur's mother didn't see her lying on the floor for over an hour on Saturday, she began searching for the teenager.

A fundraiser organized by the Maritime Sikh Society revealed that Gursimran's mother asked several colleagues about her whereabouts, “but they all brushed it aside, thinking she might be somewhere helping a customer.”

Repeated attempts to contact Gursimran by telephone were unsuccessful. Her phone was unreachable. “Mom panicked as it was unusual for her to turn off her phone during the day,” the fundraiser said.

Gursimran's mother was opening the walk-in oven when someone pointed out the “leak” coming from it, The Sun reported.

Raised money for family in India

A GoFundMe organized by the Maritime Sikh Society for Kaur's family has more than doubled its C$50,000 goal. A total of C$194,309 was raised for Gursimran Kaur's family in India (more than 1.1 crore).

“The suffering of this family is unimaginable and indescribable. They need your support to get through this terrible time,” the fundraiser says.

Gursimran Kaur and her mother, originally from Ludhiana, had moved to Canada from the UK three years ago. They started working at the Walmart supermarket about two years ago.

Her father and brother are still in India. It is understood some of the funds will be used to bring them to Canada.

It is unclear how the 19-year-old became trapped in the commercial oven as it cannot be locked from the outside. The Walmart store is currently closed to customers.
