22 injured, hospitalized in head-on car and bus crash in Union Township

UNION, NJ – At least 22 people were injured and hospitalized after a head-on collision between a car and an NJ Transit bus Friday morning, the Township of Union NJ Police Department said.

Around 7:20 a.m., multiple 911 calls reported a head-on crash on Stuyvesant Avenue near Pleasant Parkway in Union Township.

Union Township police officers went to the scene and discovered that a BMW had driven onto the south side of Stuyvesant Avenue and struck a New Jersey Transit bus, police said.

The driver of the BMW and numerous people on the bus were injured.

Officials called for help and asked for mutual aid for the large number of injured people. The Union Fire Department coordinated medical response with Union County Mutual Aid coordinators.

The BMW driver was taken to the University Hospital due to his injuries. The more than 20 passengers and the bus driver were also taken to various hospitals in the area.

The bus passenger's injuries included a broken ankle, facial injuries, neck pain and general trauma, police said.

The road was closed to allow the numerous ambulances to deliver and transport those in need to hospitals.

Department of Transportation officials are investigating and will determine the cause of this accident.
