Killeen ISD combats bullying with Stop the Hurt forum

KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – A panel discussion on bullying in the Killeen Independent School District (KISD) drew an engaged crowd of educators, parents and community members. The discussion highlighted the urgent need to combat bullying not only among students but also among adults.

KISD Board of Trustees member Rodney Gilchrist emphasized the importance of community engagement: “This is one of the biggest issues in any school district today. And you see all of these parents speaking up, taking the time to speak, to listen, and to offer insights and suggestions to help us address the problem appropriately. So I think it’s a great, great thing.”

Panelists discussed the serious impact of bullying on students' mental health and examined how factors in the home environment can contribute to bullying behavior. Participants were encouraged to share their experiences, resulting in a sensitive and open conversation about the challenges faced by both students and parents.

Shawna Collins, a parent and student mentor, emphasized the importance of community support: “I love the way the community, parents and educators all come together for the same goal to stop bullying, no matter the form of bullying.” Everyone has their own experiences, so everyone is valuable. And sharing their experiences helped me, even if I didn’t go through it myself, it helped me guide the kids who might be going through the same thing.”

Parents also raised concerns about bullying behavior by some teachers and administrators and emphasized the need for systemic change. Some also asked the panel for advice on how to help their children who have become bullies.

During the course of the event, many participants expressed their desire for actionable measures to combat bullying in schools and at home.

Nigel Dunn, a parent who advocates for proactive measures, suggested a new initiative: “I want to start a program called DAB – Dads Against Bullying. And so a lot of fathers come together, we go to schools and run programs. We teach the young men and women about bullying, its peculiarities and its characteristics.”

The event ended with parents feeling recognized and empowered, reinforcing the community's commitment to fighting bullying.

“I have three children in KISD and I want to make sure they are in a safe environment. As a father and member of the community, I am committed to ensuring that bullying is not tolerated,” Dunn added.

As Killeen continues to confront this statewide crisis, the dialogue initiated at this panel discussion is intended to foster continued collaboration and support within the community and signal a unified stance against bullying.
