Two more people, including a key organizer, were arrested in connection with illegal car meets in Philadelphia

An important organizer and planner of one of the illegal car meets in Philadelphia Last month, he was arrested Friday morning in Levittown, Pennsylvania, police said.

Philadelphia police identified the man as Joseph Cavanaugh, 21, of Levittown and described the development as “a significant arrest.” Police said Cavanaugh was arrested Friday on Coral Lane in Levittown and charged with aggravated assault, causing a catastrophe, criminal mischief, recklessly endangering another person, criminal conspiracy and other related charges.

Police also arrested 21-year-old James Hare of Northeast Philadelphia on Friday in the 11700 block of Bustleton Avenue in connection with the illegal car meetings starting September 21st.

According to police, Hare was charged with risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, criminal conspiracy, fleeing a police officer and other related charges.

Last month, police responded to 11 illegal car gatherings across the city in which large crowds and hundreds of vehicles occupied intersections, set off fireworks in the streets, did donuts, street raced, drifted and engaged in other reckless activities.

“This will have consequences. If you come to Philadelphia, I'm telling you now that we will not tolerate this. We have a lot of investigative resources regarding this,” Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum said Friday. “And as I said before, you will see us knocking on your door first thing in the morning and of course you will be charged, along with the District Attorney's Office assisting us in our investigation and decision on the allegations.

Rosenbaum said several more arrests will be made as part of this investigation. So far there have been around half a dozen arrests in connection with the meetings.

It's unclear how many car meets Cavanaugh has previously been linked to.

Police arrested a man earlier this month I wore a banana suit the night of the car meet. The man was identified as 18-year-old Shane Thomas. Police claim Thomas is part of one illegal car meet on September 21st in the city's Spring Garden District, adding that he is accused of jumping on police vehicles.
