Rock County drug dealer sentenced after man overdoses and dies

JANESVILLE, Wis. (WIFR) – A 49-year-old man is receiving his sentence after being found guilty of trafficking drugs to a man who later overdosed and died.

David Steptoe, of Janesville, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter by delivery of drugs and possession of fentanyl with intent to deliver. The charges stem from cases from 2021 and 2023.

On October 25, a judge sentenced Steptoe to 32 years in prison in the Wisconsin State Prison System; 22 years in prison and 10 years extended supervision.

Prosecutors say Steptoe sold drugs to several people throughout Rock County, including fentanyl to a 41-year-old man, leading to his overdose and death.

Investigators allege Steptoe also had cocaine and fentanyl at the time of his arrest in January 2023.
