Pokémon Black and White Leaks Explained

Pokémon recently came one of the biggest leaks in the history of the series. Almost every game in the series has been revealed, and secrets big and small are now flooding the community discussion. Although upcoming releases were largely spared, Pokémon Black and White are among the many older titles included in this leak.

The account sharing this information is known online as Centro Leaks, with many referring to the recent event as “Teraleak.” Centro Leaks' pinned tweet currently contains an archive they uploaded that supposedly contains all the information published in the Teraleak. This information is currently considered much more reliable than a simple rumor, as clear physical evidence is disclosed in each case. With that in mind, it's time to explore everything that has been revealed Pokémon Black and White.

Pokémon Black and White could make a comeback, but not necessarily as remakes (yet).

Newly surfaced information suggests that Pokémon Black and White could return sooner rather than later, but not in the way fans expected.

Everything the massive Pokemon leak revealed about Black and White

Unreleased 5th generation Pokémon

Some of the most tantalizing information includes the Pokémon that were cut from each generation. Compared to some other generations, the Teraleak has relatively few unreleased Pokémon discovered Pokémon Black and White. This is likely because Generation 5 had a mature design philosophy from the start and attempted to remix many of the iconic Pokémon designs from the Kanto region. Currently, there are only seven Pokémon revealed by the Teraleak that didn't make the list.

Only three of these seven designs are stages of a distinct line of evolution, with Tanisu, Tanino and Taniking appearing to be some type of amphibious crustacean. Garock's dinosaur-like appearance and rock typing suggest that it may have been intended as a Fossil Pokémon, with its build even bearing some resemblance to Carracosta. Likewise, Kaburion is clearly a defunct evolution of Karrablast.

After these designs, the two remaining designs are relatively unremarkable. Gurokken and Awanezumi were clearly scrapped relatively early in the design process and bear little resemblance to existing Pokémon. Awanezumi appears to be a rodent, meaning it may have been intended as a native 5th generation Pikachu clone, but otherwise it's clear that these designs were scrapped in favor of clearer ideas.

5th Generation Beta Pokemon Designs

Many of the Pokémon that made it into the final version still have beta designs that were left on the cutting room floor. However, this seems to confirm that the overall designs of Generation 5 had a relatively consistent plan from the start. While some designs are almost unrecognizable, many of these beta designs match their final counterparts.

For example, the 5th generation starter Pokémon appear to be relatively unchanged, with only a few color changes. The legendary Pokémon “Nature Forces” have now been completely redesigned. Kyurem is a perfect example to demonstrate this dynamic, as the beta design of its base form is drastically different, while its fusion forms appear to be relatively unchanged.

Unpublished character biographies of 5th generation trainers

Another important topic of discussion is the revelation of the character biographies of numerous trainers throughout the series. It's important to recognize that these leaks come directly from Game Freak and that these design documents were never intended to see the light of day. This means that these character biographies share information that, while interesting, can hardly be considered canon.

Special focus areas are the Gym Leaders during the game and the Elite Four. Information included in character biographies includes age, ethnicity, and even the real-world counterparts who supposedly inspired each character. Each of these biographies can be viewed in a Centro Leaks thread, with much of the information revealed causing controversy and some details even spawning short-lived memes.

More massive data leaks from Pokemon Black and White

The Teraleak got its name due to the leak that revealed around a terabyte of data. Of course, that means it has a lot more to offer beyond beta designs and edited content. This has led to numerous different leaks, each of which could have a different impact on each generation.

Pokémon Black and WhiteFor example, the entire source code was unearthed. This led to leakers discovering numerous unused audio files and even a comprehensive debug menu. Regardless, this information didn't add much to the rumors Pokémon Black and White Remakes or a Legends Game set in the Unova region. However, this has greatly improved fans' understanding of Generation 5 and will undoubtedly do wonders for ROMs in the future.
