Still no jury selected in Adam Coy murder trial

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It started with a pool of more than 100 potential jurors, and while many of them have been sent home, the final jury has not yet been chosen.

What you need to know

  • After two days of jury selection, there is still no official jury for the Adam Coy murder trial
  • Since this is a murder trial involving police, experts say it will be very difficult to assemble a jury
  • A jury is expected to be selected by tomorrow morning and the jury session will continue into the afternoon

On Tuesday afternoon, the judge said 60 potential jurors were still being questioned.

Attorneys for both sides must reduce that number to 12 jurors and four alternates before opening statements can begin.

As for the case itself, Coy shot Andre Hill almost four years ago. At the time, Hill was in his friend's garage when Coy showed up after responding to a noise complaint. Coy pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. Kevin McMunigal, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University, said jury selection for such an important murder trial is extremely difficult, especially when lawyers are doing the questioning.

“They're sort of trying their case in front of the jury, using the questions from our selection to, you know, try to convince people or, you know, in advance, before the jury is seated, which isn't such a great thing . I don’t think so,” McMunigal said.

The jury's final decision is expected on Wednesday morning, and then on Wednesday afternoon the official jury will visit the site where the 2020 shooting took place. But in a case like this, the timeline of events could change.
