5 teens arrested in hit-and-run crash that left St. Pete man dead just feet from his home: SPPD

Five teenagers were arrested days after a hit-and-run accident in St. Petersburg that killed a 70-year-old man just meters from his home.

St. Pete police said the teens, all between the ages of 12 and 15, are facing multiple charges in connection with the Monday, Oct. 21 crash.

Investigators said 70-year-old Edward Webb was struck and killed by a stolen Jeep as he walked on 9th Avenue South near his home. According to police, the car was traveling north on 12th Street South and turning onto 9th Avenue South when it was struck.

The SUV drove off after hitting Webb and was later found abandoned a few blocks from the scene, officials said.

Authorities said a 14-year-old was identified as the driver of the stolen SUV and he had four other teenage passengers in the car when the accident occurred. SPPD officials have not released the names of the juveniles involved.

Just a day after the accident, Webb's wife, Jeanette Chaniel, said her husband was returning home from work when he was struck by the vehicle. Webb's family said he owned an air conditioning company.

Chaniel said Webb has a son, daughters, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. According to Chaniel, he was known for always making people laugh.

“Without regard for human life,” Chaniel said. “A senseless act. Took someone’s life and wouldn’t have even had the decency to come back and stop.”

Police are currently working with the Pinellas Pasco District Attorney's Office to file charges against all five teens, officials said.

The 14-year-old driver was arrested on charges of third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter while leaving the scene, driving without a license resulting in death and grand larceny of a motor vehicle, authorities said. The other teens face charges of third-degree murder (aggravated murder) and grand theft motor vehicle.
