1 in critical condition after fiery crash on I-295 south in Smithfield

One person is in critical condition after a fiery crash on I-295 South in Smithfield Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced the closure of I-295 South due to the accident around 2 p.m

The three-vehicle accident occurred on southbound I-295, Exit 15B, near northbound Route 7.

Officials at the scene told NBC 10 that one person is in critical condition as a result of the accident.

Crews said the cause of the accident was unclear, but the fire started when a spark hit a fuel line on one of the cars.

RIDOT had blocked all lanes due to the incident. The lanes were reopened around 3:30 p.m.
