18-year-old arrested in murder attempt; Here's what we know

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – A Baton Rouge teenager has been arrested and accused of taking $2,000 to kill a man. Johnny Green was killed in his home in September.

Baton Rouge police believe he was shot shortly after arriving at his home on Brady Street.

“On September 13, shortly before officers responded to a shooting in the 3500 block of Brady Street, just before 2 p.m., they discovered that Green had been shot multiple times, possibly having just gotten home. There was no suspect and no known motive at this time,” said Darren Ahmed, BRPD public information officer.

New evidence led to the arrest of 18-year-old Anthony Torreganohayes on Thursday. He is charged with first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

According to the BPRD, cases of contract killing are not common in Baton Rouge, especially when the suspect is a teenager.

“Today this is not an everyday thing and I know that sometimes people look and say this is something you see in a movie or a movie,” Ahmed said. “Even if someone gives a large number or a small number, it is still the fact that someone was willing to pay someone to commit a crime that they themselves were not willing to commit.”

According to BRPD, witnesses told investigators that the suspect was seen fleeing the scene on a bicycle and that he was armed with a rifle. A tip from a detective and recordings from a surveillance camera played a role in the arrest.

The camera footage was made available to police as part of a new initiative to encourage more people to help fight crime.

“We work with many third-party contractors to help BRPD deploy additional cameras throughout the City of Baton Rouge. “Our mayor, our boss, all of these people are involved in making sure that we have a better and safer Baton Rouge and CCTV is one way to achieve that,” explained Ahmed.

According to the police, they are still investigating who might have hired the alleged teenage hitman.

“If we come to the conclusion that we are investigating another suspect or a person who hired the person, then yes he will be criminally charged,” Ahmed said.

The teen was arrested Oct. 1 on unrelated charges. During that arrest, evidence of the suspected murder was collected and he was arrested again on Thursday.
