Full spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance follow. If you haven't seen the film yet, go watch it our review First!

The Venom trilogy has come to a close with The Last Dance, and while that film seems to tie together the story of Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and everyone's favorite brain-eating symbiote, there are still some threads that can be explored further Sony Marvel Films (There's also the fact that Hardy did it said he was open to playing the character again). We'll get back to that in a moment, but first let's talk about what's actually happening The Film.

How does “The Last Dance” work? Let's get into it.

Crunch and emptiness

“The Last Dance” begins with a scene that fans will recognize from the film’s trailers: the (very brief) introduction of Knull, the god of symbioteswhich was created by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. Knull is played by Andy Serkis, who, as you may recall, directed the second Venom film, Let There Be Carnage. Knull is trapped in a void on the planet Klyntar and can only get out via something called the Codex (if you're getting flashbacks to Man of Steel, that goes for us too).

How the Code works isn't entirely clear, but apparently Venom has one because Eddie briefly died in the past (in the first film), meaning Knull sends his dogs, the Xenophages, to find him. Or at least one of them arrives on Earth and begins hunting Venom, with the caveat that he won't be able to “see” the Codex until Eddie is fully transformed into Venom. When Eddie is just himself or small parts of the symbiote are escaping his body, he is invisible to the xenophage.

If either Eddie or Venom are killed, the Code will no longer exist.

It was established early on that the Codex could only survive if both the symbiote and its host were alive. If either Eddie or Venom are killed, the Code will no longer exist. So Eddie and Venom are on the run because the Xenophage is trying to capture them. They're also on the run from the government because Eddie is blamed for some deaths in the last film, because hey, why not have two motivations for the same action?

That's how it works Rex Strickland by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Dr. Teddy Payne by Juno Temple Follow along as the couple works for Area 55 Extra top secret alien research facility built beneath Area 51, which we believe is top secret as usual and is currently being dismantled. Dr. Payne has a whole host of symbiotes in her lab, including toxinwhich is associated with Stephen Graham's Patrick Mulligan, who survived the last film. Toxin reveals to Strickland and Payne that Knull is a threat to the entire universe, leading everyone to agree that he must be stopped from retrieving the Codex. With us so far?

Venom: The Last Dance Ending Explained

The film culminates with everyone arriving at Area 55, where the Xenophage invades and begins destroying the place. After Toxin and Mulligan are killed, the other symbiotes are freed and begin bonding with some associates to fight off the xenophage. Here it becomes clear that the symbiotes have no ill intentions towards humanity and are actively trying to help Strickland and his forces fight the xenophage. The fight spills outside, where the Xenophage receives support from more of his own kind (we don't know why this didn't happen sooner).

Eddie and Venom rescue a family of alien enthusiasts who helped them on their journey, led by Rhys Ifans as Martin definitely not Curt Connors from “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Dr. Payne also bonds with a symbiote during the fights, who appears to be Agony from the comics based on her appearance and skin color. Payne's symbiote form also has super speed powers due to being struck by lightning as a child. Sure, why not?

With Venom seemingly dead, Eddie is taken to the hospital where he is informed that his criminal record has been expunged.

Since the xenophages have remarkable healing factors (they can reassemble themselves even after being shredded into dozens of pieces) and kill most other symbiotes, Venom and Eddie seem to be toast. Realizing that there is no way to end Knull's threat without destroying the Codex, Venom decides to sacrifice himself, separating himself from Eddie and wrapping himself around the Xenophages like he was the stickiest gum in the cosmos. He then drags her and himself under a shower of acid that Strickland used to destroy materials from Area 51. Venom and the Xenophages are killed by the shower (and so is Strickland, because he sets off a grenade that causes the whole thing to explode). , causing the codex to vaporize. Knull can obviously sense this, because we see a shot of him uttering an angry “No!!!!” how that happens. Payne saves her colleague Sadie thanks to her aforementioned super speed.

With Venom seemingly dead, Eddie is taken to the hospital, where a random general informs him that his criminal record has been expunged, but on the condition that he not tell anyone about his experiences with the symbiotes. Eddie then goes to New York City and looks at the Statue of Liberty (something he and Venom supposedly wanted to do together) and promises to never forget his symbiote friend.

Okay, but what about the post-credits scenes? And is Venom really dead?

As previously mentioned, there are two post-credits scenes in The Last Dance that hint at the future of the franchise, even though this run of Venom solo films is (apparently) over. The first is the mid-credits scene where we get another look at Knull saying, “Your champion has fallen, the King in Black is awake.” Your world will burn and you will watch!” Although his Plans were foiled this time, this tease confirms that Sony wants him to play a major role in more films. Director Kelly Marcel reiterated this in an interview with IGN where she said “This is just the beginning for Knull.”

The second scene is at the very end of the credits and shows the bartender, played by Cristó Fernández, who appeared for the first time in the film Post-credits scene from Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Bartender has a variant with longer hair in the Sony universe, and this was kidnapped by Strickland's forces earlier in the film. He emerges from the rubble of Area 51 and calls for someone. We then see a broken vial that once contained a symbiote (Agony, apparently, because there is some violet light in it) being approached by a cockroach. That's it.

So the big question we have now is: Is Venom really dead? Probably not, because when Strickland captures the bartender, he saves him from a small part of the symbiote that Venom left behind. Strickland contains this piece in a vial (very similar to the one in the post-credits scene) and we never see it again. We don't know if this loose thread will be how Sony revives Venom down the road, but with more Knull and Sony-Marvel films reportedly on the way, we'd be surprised if the most popular symbiote character doesn't return would in some form in future films.

The only loose thread is that Strickland is taking orders from a shadowy figure we never see clearly. This appears to be Doctor Dan Lewis, the fiancé of Anne Weying from the previous films, as the actor is credited as Reid Scott. We don't know what he's up to, but he obviously has an interest in the symbiotes. Maybe we'll find out more about his plans in Kraven the Hunter or another Sony Marvel film.
