Simpsons memes go viral after Trump claims 'dogs eat in Springfield'

A flood of Simpsons memes have emerged on social media in response to a bizarre and completely false statement about pets made by Donald Trump during his first presidential debate with Kamala Harris on Tuesday.

In a claim that was almost immediately refuted by ABC News anchor David Muir, Trump said, “In Springfield, they eat the dogs.” The people who came in. They eat the cats. They eat – they eat the pets of the people who live there. And that’s exactly what’s happening in our country, and it’s a disgrace.”

Trump was referring to a racist rumor by Vice President JD Vance that Haitian immigrants in the city of Springfield, Ohio, had kidnapped and eaten pets, “causing chaos” in the city. Springfield police said they were aware of the “rumors” but had no information to support them.

As Harris looked on, stunned, Muir interjected and corrected the former president, adding: “ABC News reached out to the city manager there. He told us that there have been no credible reports of specific allegations that pets of individuals within the immigrant community have been harmed, harmed or mistreated.”

Trump protested, saying he had seen stories on TV about pets being eaten, adding: “People on TV say, 'My dog was taken and used as food,' so maybe he said that, and maybe that's a good statement.” for a city.” Manager.”

Given that Trump was referring to a town called Springfield, it didn't take long for a series of jokes about the Simpsons' fictional hometown to appear online, with many references to the family dog, Santa's Little Helper.

“IN SPRINGFIELD THEY EAT THE DOGS,” one person wrote on X/Twitter along with a picture of the cartoon pooch.

Another X/Twitter user quoted Trump, but this time also added a picture of the Simpsons cat Snowball II.

Elsewhere, an adaptation of the song “We Put The Spring in Springfield” from Bart After Dark has deservedly gone viral.

In another case of The Simpsons seemingly predicting the future, a clip from the 1997 episode “The Springfield Files” was shared in which the Red Tick Beer Brewery is seen making their drink using dogs.

Showrunner Al Jean said about people on The Simpsons' habit of predicting big news events like the start of the Ukraine-Russia war The Hollywood Reporter The The Simpsons The long-standing “prediction” of such events is “unfortunately the norm rather than the prediction.”

“When it comes to predictions, there are two types: the trivial ones, like Don Mattingly getting in trouble because of his hair Homer at bat. And then there are predictions like that,” Jean said. “I hate to say it, but I was born in 1961, so I spent 30 years of my life with the specter of the Soviet Union.”

“For me, unfortunately, this is more the norm than the prediction. We just thought it was going to fail.”
