Before the game

USC is looking to lose three games after losing to the Maryland Terrapins in their last fourth-quarter blowout last Saturday, a common theme for the Trojans this season.

After the two-minute timeout, the Trojans were preparing for a field goal to make a nine-point game when the kick was blocked, Maryland recovered and returned it into USC territory. Five plays later, Billy Armstrong Jr. scored the go-ahead touchdown with 53 seconds left in regulation, giving the Terrapins a 29-28 victory. It was the fifth time in the Lincoln-Riley era that the Trojans blew a 14-point lead. Former USC legends including Matt Leinart, LenDale White and Rey Maualuga expressed their frustration with the program on social media following the loss.

USC held a fourth-quarter lead in all seven games this season, but suffered four losses by the end of October and saw its college playoff chances disappear with half the season remaining.

“We were in a lot of very close games. We had some opportunities to get separation in some of these games, but we didn't and we have to get better at that,” USC coach Lincoln Riley said.

As the Trojans head into this matchup, there is a lot of pressure on the program to finish the season strong, especially with Riley, and that starts tonight.

Rutgers will also be looking to end its own three-game losing streak as they make the 2,800-mile trip to the West in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Scarlet Knights started 4-0 this season but have lost their last three games, including one last week against the Trojans' crosstown rival, the UCLA Bruins.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, USC is the 13.5-point favorite over Rutgers. USC is 4-3 against the spread this season.
