Vandalism suspect who damaged $500,000 of BART entrances has been arrested

A man suspected of vandalism that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to the entrances of three BART stations in San Francisco has been arrested, authorities said.

Saqueo Delcidmontenegro, 28, was taken into custody Tuesday evening after he was spotted on a BART train Tuesday evening by a BART police ambassador who recognized him from an information flyer.

Since Oct. 5, BART officials said 29 large glass panels at the entrances to the Embarcadero, Montgomery and Powell Street stations have been damaged.

Many of the destroyed panels are part of new canopies being built over the entrances to downtown train stations.

The canopies are required by law to protect new outdoor escalators that are being installed. The total cost of replacing the panels is estimated to be more than $500,000.

Delcidmontenegro, a San Francisco resident, was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of five counts of vandalism.
