“And then I go and spoil everything,” explains the TikTok trend

Ruining an otherwise great moment with an awkward comment or inappropriate joke is relatable to many people – and has since become a viral TikTok trend.

Across the app, users have been sharing videos of themselves lip-syncing to the lyrics: “And then I spoil it all by saying something stupid like 'I love you.'” It's hard to figure out who started it has – but it has arrived on the radar of many celebrities.

Stars like Sabrina Carpenter and Joe Jonas have joined this trend, but let's go back to its roots.

Here's a breakdown of the trend and the unexpected origin of the viral sound.

Where does the “And Then I Go and Spoil It All” TikTok trend come from?

The audio excerpt is from the song “Somethin' Stupid”. There are multiple versions of the song circulating on TikTok. The original was written by Clarence Carson Parks II and performed by him and his wife Gaile Foote in 1966.

Just a year later, Frank Sinatra and his daughter Nancy did a cover of “Somethin' Stupid.” Although the cover itself has become increasingly popular, it is still not the most listened to version on TikTok.

The version most used by TikTok users participating in the trend is the Jennifer Lawrence cover featured in the 2015 film Joy. The film is a biographical comedy that chronicles the life and achievements of entrepreneur Joy Mangano, and Lawrence plays the matriarch of the entrepreneurial family.

Lawrence's husky singing voice has become the audio cue for the trend, with many TikTok users admitting they didn't even recognize Sinatra's version of the track.
