HMWSSB plugs leaks in Osmansagar pipelines in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has initiated steps to resolve leakage issues and prevent pollutants from contaminating the water between the Osmansagar reservoir and the 14.2 km long Asifnagar filter beds built in 1927. The Board has also taken steps to identify and block illegal water abstraction using MC-Inject or equivalent chemicals, including packers, thinners and quick cement.

This came after reports of severe leakage in the raw water pipeline running between the sections, prompting HMWSSB managing director K. Ashok Reddy to check the condition of the pipeline on Friday.

According to sources, the raw water from Osmansagar is transported by gravity to Asifnagar Water Treatment Plant, which transports 26 million gallons of water per day (MGD). The open line runs from Gandipet to Asifnagar filter beds through Kokapet, Narsingi, Puppalaguda, Manikonda, Shaikpet and Hakeempet covering 486 chains.

The Osmansagar water is supplied to areas like Ahmednagar, Tolichowki, Langar Houz, Humayunnagar, Salar Jung Colony, Vijayanagar Colony, Mehdipatnam and other nearby places. The significant leakage in the raw water pipeline would cost an estimated cost of Rs 40 lakh, according to authorities.
