A CHP search is underway Friday evening in Berkeley for the driver of an allegedly stolen car.

The CHP confirmed its helicopter was in the area and a search was underway.

The driver reportedly jumped out of the car and hid from police to avoid capture.

A reader said a helicopter circled over the area of ​​San Pablo Avenue near Delaware Street and University Avenue for at least 20 minutes starting around 9 p.m.

Another saw it from Sixth Street and University.

A resident said she saw police activity on the ground in the area of ​​Hearst Avenue and Eighth Street as a helicopter circled overhead with its searchlight on.

The CHP said the incident is ongoing.

Update, 10:10 p.m The CHP said a K9 unit was assisting in the search, which was focused on a backyard. Brentwood police may also be on scene.
