How to Get Rid of Unwanted Prescriptions on National Drug Take Back Day

(WXMI) – An annual tradition has returned. It's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), it is a day when the public is encouraged to remove unneeded medications from their homes to prevent drug abuse and opioid addiction.

It's a simple process.

Look in your medicine cabinet, drawers, or wherever you have those old, expired, or unwanted prescription medications. When it comes to disposal, there are many options throughout West Michigan.

For example, Meijer stores participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

We're told that anyone, customer or not, can drop off unwanted medications at “easily identifiable” kiosks near any pharmacy. Meijer has already collected nearly 200 tons of unneeded medications in its kiosks over the years.

However, some items are not accepted. These include: needles or other sharp objects, inhalers, mercury thermometers, medications containing iodine, and illegal drugs.

Meijer Pharmacy hours vary by location, so it's important to check before you walk out the door.

If Meijer doesn't work for you, there are plenty of other local options available. These often include local law enforcement agencies and national pharmacy chains.
