UFC 308 Fight Card: PPV schedule, odds and predictions for Max Holloway vs. Topuria | News, results, highlights, statistics and rumors

Robert Whittaker and Khamzat ChimaevChris Unger/Zuffa LLC

Weight issues have likely delayed Khamzat Chimaev's first attempt at UFC gold. The 30-year-old has bounced between the welterweight and middleweight divisions, but his wait could be over if he emerges victorious at UFC 308.

Chimaev has a 13-0 record, with his most recent win coming via a majority decision against Kamaru Usman. That was the boldest statement that he was ready for a title shot, but he's still only ranked 13th in the current middleweight rankings.

The biggest question Chimaev needs to answer is whether his high-volume, high-pressure grappling game is enough to beat a natural middleweight. The win over Usman should mean a lot, but The Nigerian Nightmare was a championship caliber welterweight but was trying to make a name for himself in the division.

Whittaker is a former middleweight champion who catapulted himself back into title contention with a first-round knockout win over Ikram Aliskerov in his last fight.

Whether Whittaker can use the momentum to beat another rising star is one of the most interesting subplots of the night.

The key for Whittaker will be weathering the early storm. Chimaev loves to push the pace, but he is used to finishing early through his relentless pressure. If Whittaker's takedown defense is on point and he makes Chimaev chase him for a while, there's a good chance he'll run out of gas.

From there, Whittaker's hitting might have a chance to shine.

Whittaker's takedown defense rate is 82 percent. His defensive wrestling combined with his size as a natural middleweight could be enough to hold off Chimaev and pull off an upset.

Prediction: Whittaker by decision
