Lyon County's attempted murder case is now in the hands of the jury

An Emporia man accused of attempted murder and more than 20 other charges now await a jury's verdict.

The jury in the criminal trial of Travis Wade Westcott officially accepted the case on Friday afternoon. Jurors deliberated for about two hours before wrapping up the trial for the weekend. They will resume deliberations on Monday.

The trial began on October 15 and testimony ended last Thursday. Closing arguments and jury instructions took up much of Friday's program.

Westcott faces 25 charges in Lyon District Court for alleged illegal activities between March 2020 and May 2023. In addition to attempted murder, Westcott faces a number of charges including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated witness intimidation, stalking and criminal threats.

Westcott is also charged with aggravated intimidation in a separate case from December 2023. The trial in this case is scheduled for November 13th and is scheduled to begin on either November 18th or December 16th.
