On drug take-back day, law enforcement disposes of old, unused prescriptions

The Indiana State Police is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the 27th annual Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The aim of the nationwide event is to prevent the misuse and theft of prescription medications through proper disposal.

Several collection sites will be set up across northern Indiana on Saturday:

South Bend

  • St. Joseph County Jail
  • Clay Fire Station No. 21

Granger

Mishawaka

  • Mishawaka Fire Station #4

Elkhart

  • Elkhart Police Department lobby
  • Beacon Aquatic Center

A more detailed list of additional locations can be found on the DEA website.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications can be dropped off to be thrown in the trash.

Old medications should not be flushed down the toilet or thrown in the trash as they pose a safety and health risk.

E-cigarettes without batteries and e-cigarette cartridges are also taken.

New or used needles will not be accepted.

This is a free and anonymous service with no questions asked.

Narcan will also be distributed at each location.
