Mother dies, infant fights for his life after crash in Phoenix

A 25-year-old woman is dead, her infant is in critical condition and three other children were injured in a collision near 2800 South 19 Friday afternoonTh Avenue, police said.

The accident occurred around 1:20 p.m. on Oct. 25, and when officers arrived they found a car with the woman, who was not identified, and children inside, according to a release from Phoenix police.

The woman and child were taken to hospitals and the mother was later pronounced dead.

The four children were not secured in child seats, the police said.

“The infant is still fighting for his life and remains listed as critical and life-threatening. Three other young children were also taken to local hospitals. “Fortunately, her condition has been updated to ‘incapacitated,’” the police press release said.

Preliminary information indicates a sedan driven by a 23-year-old man was traveling south on 19th Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds and accelerating at a yellow light when it collided with a pickup truck, police said.

The truck, driven by a 75-year-old man, was traveling north on 19th Avenue when the driver attempted to turn left onto West Lower Buckeye Road, according to the release. At the intersection, the car collided with the front of the truck.

The truck driver was uninjured, remained at the scene of the accident and was examined for impairment. Impairment is not currently believed to be a factor. said the police.

A final charging decision will be made once reconstruction of the collision is complete, police said.
