A jury finds a Florida woman who trapped her boyfriend in a suitcase guilty of murder

ORLANDO, Fla. — A Florida woman left her boyfriend in a suitcase, grabbed a bat and hit him as hard as she could, police said.

Jorge Torres' final moments were on video. He screams, “Sarah, I can't breathe, baby!” She replies, “That's on you!” The coroner said Torres suffocated in Winter Park. He was 42.

Sarah Boone called 911 on February 24, 2020, claiming it was an accident. During her trial in Orange County, her defense claimed that she feared for her life, that she suffered from “abused spouse syndrome” and that there was evidence that the couple had experienced domestic violence in the past.

On Friday evening, the jury found Boone, 47, guilty of second-degree murder. Boone testified during her trial, trying to explain why she locked the suitcase and refused to help him out overnight.

“I wanted him to try to understand how I felt so that maybe he could make progress and become a better person,” Boone said in court.

Boone used her phone to record the two videos that the prosecution submitted as evidence and that the jury viewed during the trial. Court TV reported that jury deliberations lasted less than two hours on Friday. The Orlando Sentinel reported that it took jurors about 90 minutes to reach a unanimous verdict.

Boone's sentencing will take place on December 2nd at 1:30 p.m.
