Testimony continues in Adam Coy's murder trial

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The jury in Adam Coy's murder trial is hearing testimony from several of Coy's former colleagues.

Coy is the former Columbus police officer charged with murder for shooting and killing an unarmed black man just before Christmas nearly four years ago. We heard from the prosecution from five different witnesses who were directly involved in the shooting four years ago.

What you need to know

  • The prosecution has so far presented six witnesses to testify in Adam Coy's murder trial
  • Witnesses include a neighbor, two police officers, a paramedic, an investigator and a coroner
  • The first full week of testing has been completed and is expected to last several more days

Witnesses include two police officers, a firefighter paramedic, a criminal investigator and a representative of the Franklin County coroner. Prosecutors began the day by further questioning Columbus Police Officer Amy Detweiler. She was with Coy the night he shot Andre Hill after responding to a noise complaint.

They played the bodycam footage and audio from the night of the shooting. During cross-examination, the defense focused on Detweiler's training as an officer, particularly regarding the use of deadly force and whether she trusted Coy's decision.

“In that situation, Adam Coy told you, 'Stop, go away.' I can't. “I need to see his hands,” defenseman Mark Collins said.

“Yes,” said Detweiler.

“Okay. Do you have any doubt that Adam Coy believed the person had a gun?” Collins said.

“No,” said Detweiler.

The firefighter paramedic who arrived at the scene discussed his view of the night upon arrival.

“From the initial assessment, it looked like he may have been shot in the right leg,” said Paul Hill, paramedic with the Upper Arlington Fire Department. “There was a fair amount, a large amount of blood.” And then there was also a large collection of blood in the chest and abdominal area.”

Later that afternoon we heard testimony from the special agent who was on the scene the night of the shooting collecting photos and evidence. Prosecutors also showed the jury several pictures from the night, along with the keys Coy believed to be a gun and the phone Hill was using when he was shot.

The final witness of the day was one of the forensic pathologists who examined Hill's body. The first week of the murder trial ends on Friday, but we're just getting started. Many more witnesses will testify starting Monday morning.
