Heavyweight Chris Barnett finally returned at UFC 308, taking on former light heavyweight Kennedy Nzechukwu at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Barnett, who has battled injuries and the tragic death of his wife in decent years, was scheduled to face Waldo Cortes-Acosta earlier this month but was forced out of the bout when Hurricane Milton struck Tampa, where Barnett lives.

The difference in height between the towering Nzechukwu and the relatively squat Barnett was apparent early on. Barnett looked to launch a spinning attack in the early stages and launched overhand rights as Nzechukwu tried to move inside. Barnett threw an upward spinning kick just two minutes later, causing a stir in the crowd.

Nzechukwu, using a more traditional fighting style, aimed for the body but caused a stir by missing a headbutt of his own. Kicks to the body were more effective, with Nzechukwu softening Barnett in the first round. Barnett also appeared to be favoring a leg, possibly the same Achilles tendon injury he sustained during his layoff. Sensing that Barnett was incapable, Nzechukwu unloaded while Barnett covered. He tried to swing back but couldn't, practically toppling over as his leg seemed to fall out and cling to the limb.

With the win, Kennedy Nzechukwu overcomes his two-fight skid and improves to 7-5 in the octagon. Replays, meanwhile, showed Barnett favoring the leg immediately after the fighter's introduction, having jumped when Bruce Buffer called his name.

Official result: Kennedy Nzechuku defeated. Chris Barnett by TKO, round 1, 4:27
