Dispute over counterfeit money leads to shooting near Legion Field as Magic City Classic crowd gathers

An argument across from Legion Field led to gunfire Friday afternoon.

One man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and another man is in custody.

The shooting happened just before 2:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Eighth Avenue West, where many were gathering for the Magic City Classic festivities.

Sergeant. LaQuitta Wade said a man purchased some type of electronic device from an out-of-town retailer and paid with counterfeit money. When the seller realized the money was counterfeit, he retrieved the item and a physical altercation broke out between the two men.

The suspect, Wade said, then shot the clerk.

Officers were on scene, responded quickly and took the suspect into custody.

The wounded vendor was taken to UAB Hospital and is expected to be OK.

About an hour later, a man was reportedly shot in the leg in a residential area in the 800 block of Seventh Street West. His injuries were not life-threatening.
