WVU without multiple starters for today's game against Arizona

West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene and left tackle Wyatt Milum are not on the team for today's 7 p.m. road game against Arizona after missing practice all week. EerSports reported Thursday that neither would play following last week's loss to Kansas State.

Head coach Neal Brown gave no details about the injuries each suffered, but mentioned a small number of head injuries at length in his postgame press conference and then attempted to change the description to upper-body injuries at his weekly press conference on Monday.

With both starters remaining in Morgantown, redshirt sophomore Nicco Marchiol will start at quarterback and redshirt freshman Johnny Williams will start at left tackle. Marchiol is left-handed, which would mean a right-wing attack Nick Malone the blocker on the passer's blind side.

Defensive lineman from Arizona Tre Smith has a team-high 2.5 sacks this season and 12 in his career. According to Pro Football Focus, he's tied for the top of the Big 12 in quarterback pressure, playing 75 percent of his snaps on the left side. Almost all of these snaps take place on the edge of the defensive line or the line of scrimmage. Malone has not allowed a sack this season and has the fifth-highest PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating among Big 12 tackles. In fact, Malone's grade is tied with No. 20 in the nation.

Marchiol has played briefly and extensively when Greene was injured in 2022, 2023 and again this season. He is 1-0 as a starter with a home win against Texas Tech last season, but also played most of the game the week before in a win against Pitt, which Greene left in the first quarter.

Williams hasn't started a game, but he has played the most snaps among WVU's backup linemen, and although action is very limited, PFF ranks him second in pass-rush rating among Big 12 tackles behind Milum. His run-blocking grade is tied for 14th.

In addition, recipients Jaden BrayCornerback Ayden Garnes and spear Aubrey Burkes did not travel with the team and WVU opted to make the trip with 69 players, one less than the maximum for an away team in Big 12 play. Freshman quarterbacks are on the travel list Khalil WiklinsFreshman receiver Brandon Rehman and freshman cornerback Key'on Washington.

Bray will miss a third straight game, while Garnes and Burks will miss their second in a row. Garnes started five of the first six games but was absent from the Kansas State game and missed practice this week. Dontez Fagana transfer player who began his career in junior college before transferring to Charlotte, started last week and is expected to do so again Garnett Hollis. Reserves Jacolby spell And TJ Crandall have been on the roster with injuries this season, but both played and practiced against Kansas State this week.

Defensive player TJ Jackson And Hammond Russellwho were both limited in practice last week but played against Kansas State, were limited again this week. However, both trained and traveled with the team throughout the week. Run back Jahiem White left the Kansas State game in the first half and did not return, but was back at practice in a limited capacity on Wednesday and is expected to play against Arizona.
