Check out Sabrina Carpenter Loves a Musical Theater Reference

We'll be checking out the looks for tonight's show.

I can barely wait for it.

Oh my God. Oh, [censored].

Hey, Vogue, it's Sabrina,

and we're here at the Short n' Sweet Tour in Philadelphia,

This is a very special show

because I was born there.

It's my hometown.

That's why I'll show you some of our looks.

Let's go.

[upbeat jazzy music]

So tonight it's going to be a very special show.

We introduce some new variations of things,

and yes, it is just a very special time

Every time I get to play Philly.

This is Jared.

Jared is just incredibly understanding

from the idea that I have in my head

and how to increase it a thousand times,

and the, similar structure that I like on my body,

and the shapes I love for my body,

The colors that I think are really complementary.

She has such a good idea of who she is

in the best sense [Sabrina chuckles]

in an amazing way.

We started working on the tour look,

Summer, I think, around July after Coachella.

Yeah, like we have so much time for it.

Years, but it actually worked.

I think that was the perfect amount of time.

Yes, I really started thinking about it

How will I be able to endure it on stage?

Which will look really great

From the people who are all the way

in, you know, the nosebleed

to the person who is in the front row?

This was the first time I changed my wardrobe

On tour, honestly.

The nice thing is that you can get there very early

You meant, “I want all the eyes.”

be exactly the same for every act,

but just change the colors during shows.

We change it through colors and details

and accessories and likes little things here and there,

That's how I always know it

What I get myself into every night

but the audience can feel

as if they were constantly seeing something new.

At the end of the day,

Like I just have to feel so comfortable in the outfits,

And if not, the performance would be two out of ten,

So the first priority is the comfort level.

Then comes the question: “What can we do for the girls?”

And then the question comes: How can we round this off?

and make this feeling so unique?

Maybe the order is reversed.

Maybe it's the second one and then the third one is for the girls.

As if I fancied the girls,

It's like the lyrics and the tights and the little,

Yes, that's right. Do you know, the shoes,

the little Easter eggs.

Act One: She comes out of a bathtub.

Naturally. Yes, of course.

Don't know the show is happening,

lies in a towel and the mood is like:

Oh my God, I have nothing to wear.

And when you open it, it looks great.

Have something to wear.

So that the towel

The towel was one thing.

We found an old reference from someone who did this

with a jacket, and she basically reveals the jacket,

And inside the jacket is the same color as the dress.

Then we started creating the introduction

I really wanted to be in a towel for the show,

but I thought: Ah, that is

I have to be naked down there.

I don't want to be naked.

It's a lot of work.

Then we thought about making a strapless bodysuit with a corset

hide, you know,

And then the towel is the revelation of the show.

And people enjoy it every night

to see what color I come out in.

I think the towel was the only outfit

We've had that for a long time, yes.

That's not wrong.

[both laugh]

The corset outfits are a little harder

dance into it because it brings with it a stiffness,

but my waist is non-existent so we love it.

And then, in the middle of the first song,

puts on a baby doll dress.

[Sabrina] And I remember being so excited thinking:

I will carry a baby doll on stage

Because it feels like pajamas.

Like it was so comfortable.

So if I put this over the corset,

I have no insecurities, no similar thoughts about anything

Because I just feel so comfortable in these little clothes.

I mean baby doll, it was like a motif

I feel like it was there throughout the whole album.

Because we started with SNL.

I think it was the first real baby doll.

For a performance, yes. Yes, for a dress

we did that.

Brigitte Bardot, as good baby dolls as in the 60s.

She is a great reference for baby dolls

that we looked at, and it's kind of like,

I mean, you know better than me,

but girls get ready.

It's like grease in the bedroom

and all the girls get ready.

I think it was really inspired by Bye bye Birdie,

and she's like she's dancing around her room.

And I think things like that,

It felt very beneficial to the set.

Act one is really set

in the main type living room, living room.

And so it's like getting ready

because this party is happening right now.

It's like just before sunset.

Like our main screen for the show

is a window fairly consistent.

And so you start to see the colors change

as it gets later and later.

And the whole show takes us through one night.

It's inspired by Playboy After Dark,

but it's Sabrina After Dark.

The second act is obviously like cocktail hour,

And this is where things start to get hot.

Everyone's a little tipsy, not too crazy,

But, you know, the band starts

to make it a little jazzier.

Our interpretations and arrangements change,

but then the next outfit is like not corseted.

This is the area where I do most of the work

I would say I like the movement

in the show is in the second act.

So having the catsuit in this act

was really helpful for the movement.

We looked at Marilyn Monroe's clothes

a good amount of catsuits.

There's one of There's No Business Like Show Business.

It's loose with a teal sash,

and she's wearing a little ballerina heel.

And so: We tried the sash

That didn't go well.

Even though I was always very inspired

by Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face

because it is so classic and minimalist

and how much she moves in this film,

and through the black you can really see their movements.

And it just looked so elegant.

It was always very exciting

that it could be black and kidnapped.

And then you added the gloves and little details,

And that made it feel more unique to me somehow.

My changes only take a little less than two minutes.

They're pretty fast, but that's why I try

to make the visuals in between very meaningful

so that changing your wardrobe doesn't feel like that…

Technically there are two looks for the first look

Because you have the corset. That's correct.

Without the baby doll.

Then we dress the baby doll.

At second glance we have the reveal of the feathers

where we have- There is like a feather

This is attached to the catsuit so you do a twist.

Take a spin and it's deducted every night,

and then we rotate these feather colors.

And then in the third act,

[laughs] We really wanted to do this rock reveal,

But I thought, there's no way I can sing

more than a song in this long skirt

Because it's so damn hard.

Nobody knows that.

They are so heavy.

They are so heavy. And this one is like Abba,

I feel inspired.

Mhm, we went to the Abba show,

the Abba Voyage show in London.

There was this one fabric that one of the girls was wearing.

It was so wonderful and it was like liquid

and it just moved and it was a hologram.

I thought I needed this damn outfit.

Like it was so beautiful but it wasn't real.

So I just thought, “We need to do our own version of this.”

Everything is consistent.

So the first act comes entirely from Victoria's Secret.

The second act is entirely by Patou.

And then the third act is all Ludovic de Saint Sernin.

But we have a few shows

where it feels like the teams

are a really, really big part of this state

and how very important to them.

I just always love showing my love for these teams.

I'm really, really grateful for this show,

It feels like I don't have to stress

about what's going on inside me and what's going on.

All I could think about was my performance

and being in the moment and in the songs I sing.

[upbeat music]

This is our first Girl First tonight.

You know that, but [laughs] I'll tell you again.

Yes, wait, let me know.

What am I wearing tonight?

This is what you will wear.

It's red.

[both laugh]

Super important information.

Actually, it's the first time I've seen it

the red version of this look,

and it is so beautiful.

Go Phillies.

I really hope people like it

that this is an indication that I like my hometown.

I love that the tights have little kiss marks,

little, enchanted kisses.

Normally we have texts on the tights here

and they kinda look like a tattoo on my leg,

That's really cool,

But tonight we decided to kiss so it fits together.

Oh yes, these are our, well, the infamous ones,

You will wear these.

I will wear these.

And every night, by the way. [laughs]

We actually have more. We do?

Different words.

Okay, oh wait, what else do we have?

We'll find out.

Uh.

The beauty of these is that they are dazzling

and most character shoes are not blinded.

This is act two.

Tonight we wear the white feather?

[Jared] We're still deciding on the bow color.

We'll try it on.

Could be white, could be red.

Yes, red feathers, red?

Could be nice.

[laughs] Red could be nice. Surprise.

[Sabrina] We have worked for this

[Both] The conversation pit.

Mmm. Hex.

I like it because it feels more like an overnight stay.

It does

In the second act she goes into a conversation pit,

And all the friends come and it's like campfire songs.

Yeah, so it's just chill.

We're just chilling in our robes.

Yes. And then act three,

Do you want to pick it up?

Yes, that's the miniskirt.

You do this and I'll do that.

So first what's crazy,

the fact that I wear nine items of clothing,

but we have the top and we have the mini skirt,

and then we put the big skirt over the mini skirt.

And in this way,

As soon as we pull this little device,

then it just comes out. Wow.

And I am seduced by the one who stands before me

before I sing Juno.

Mmm.

And then the boots change their heart color.

And sometimes they're not filled in,

and sometimes they are filled in.

You are crazy.

This is simply the most…

I thought you would say unpleasant.

No, it looks most like beautiful glitter

I have ever seen it in my life.

Especially if we have it in different colors,

It's just as beautiful as always

to see it with the pictures.

And then this is a jersey just for the end, yes.

Fitting. [laughs]

NO!

Yes, it's very sweet.

It may need to be shorter.

It will be. OK.

It's too long.

It seems like it's quite long.

This continues for now.

I mean, we have to try it on, it's…

We actually have to try.

You never tried

that already. I've never tried this on.

We have to make sure it fits.

So this is actually important.

OK. Thank you very much.

I should go.

I'll be right back. OK.

Ope.

[chill music]

The first glance reveals it.

Go Phillies.

Okay, let's go sing.

Mwah.

[chill music continues]
