The popular word game celebrates its third anniversary this month and its popularity shows no signs of slowing down.

Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born software engineer based in New York City, has perfected it Wordle during the COVID-19 lockdowns before releasing it to the public in October 2021 – and it quickly went viral within weeks.

After its public debut, the puzzle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. This New York Times purchased it shortly thereafter for an undisclosed seven-figure sum and it became the most popular game on the release.

The rules of Wordle are easy to understand. Players are tasked with guessing a mysterious five-letter word – and must do so in a maximum of six attempts. They are helped by a color-coded tile system: green means they entered the letter correctly; Yellow indicates that the letter appears in the word but is in the wrong place. and finally, a gray tile indicates that the letter does not appear in the word at all.

Linguistics expert and Babbel Live teacher Noël Wolf said this is a surefire way Wordle The master was to “familiarize yourself with more words.”

“Expand your vocabulary for Wordle is particularly useful because the game often contains words that are not used in everyday conversations,” said Wolf Newsweek.

“Aside from reading a lot to familiarize yourself with less common words, playing other fun word games like Scrabble, word searches, and crossword puzzles can be a great way to expand your vocabulary.”

While you can read more to learn a wider range of words, Wolf added that you should be very careful with your guesses as you progress through daily play.
