Knife confiscated after argument at Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A knife was found in a bag at Ottawa Hills High School after a fight broke out Tuesday morning, school officials say.

Dr. Timothy Mabin, the school's principal, sent a message home to parents saying security “responded within seconds,” broke up the fight and found the gun in a student's nearby bag.

“We are grateful that no one was injured and the situation was quickly brought under control,” wrote Dr. Mabin. “As part of our daily safety protocols, GRPS public safety and school security officers use metal detectors to prevent weapons from entering the school. We are currently investigating how this item evaded detection.” [Tuesday] Morning.”

The principal then asked families to discuss appropriate and safe items to bring to school and encouraged them to utilize the district's safety resources.

According to the statement, the dispute was sparked by an argument that occurred outside of school last weekend.
