Taco Bell ended “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” before the Dodgers-Yankees World Series

The 2024 World Series is missing something. Most fans may not have even realized this before New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm stole second base in the top of the sixth inning. No. For free. Tacos.

For nine years, Taco Bell has run the “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” advertising campaign. If a player stole a base in the World Series, fans could get a free taco at Taco Bell the next day.

Unfortunately, there will be no more free tacos in 2024. Taco Bell is no longer an official sponsor of the MLB, so the annual campaign appears to be on hold for now.

That means Jazz Chisholm's stolen base in Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers doesn't make him a taco hero.

Maybe Taco Bell saw the writing on the wall. Between Chisholm, Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani, stolen bases have been a certainty this year.

The first “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” campaign took place in 2007. Taco Bell ran it again in 2008, but the promotion was discontinued from 2009 to 2011. It briefly returned in 2012 before becoming inactive until 2015. We've been living in a golden age of stolen tacos ever since. Free tacos were distributed every year from 2015 to 2023.

Previous taco heroes include Jacoby Ellsbury of the Boston Red Sox in 2007, the first, and Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks in 2023, the last for now. Mookie Betts is the only player to receive the dual award in 2018 and 2020. He had no chance of winning the title a third time.

The Steal a Base, Steal a Taco campaign may be over, but we can always dream of its return. It has already come back twice. Hold on tight to hope, my friends.
