Oregon tops the college football rankings, Notre Dame rises

play

Week 9 of college football brought plenty of intrigue but few real surprises. As a result, there aren't many changes in the top tier of the US LBM Coaches' Poll, as the top six teams remain the same.

Oregon continues to hold the No. 1 ranking. The Ducks captured all but one of the 54 first-place votes cast this week after a convincing win over Illinois. Georgia, which had the week off, remains at No. 2 and gets the remaining No. 1 spot. Penn State and Ohio State, which will face off next week, occupy the next two spots. No. 5 Miami (Fla.) and No. 6 Texas also maintain their positions after wins.

The changes start at No. 7, where LSU was the top-ranked team to suffer a loss. The Tigers fell to No. 16 after their loss to Texas A&M and moved up to No. 11 this week. Tennessee and Clemson improve to Nos. 7 and 8, respectively. Notre Dame, thanks to a convincing triumph over then-No. 24 Navy, vaults to No. 9 ahead of No. 10 Iowa State.

Ups and downs: Week 9 college football winners and losers

Illinois remains ranked No. 24 in the poll despite the loss at Oregon. Navy wasn't so lucky, falling out of the rankings along with Vanderbilt.

Washington State moves up to No. 22 for the first time this season, and Memphis is back in the poll, sitting a single poll point ahead of Colorado at No. 25.
