Is Chris Olave playing today? Saints WR vs. Chargers injury update

The New Orleans Saints wide receiver room has had a tough time this season due to injuries, particularly to their top two targets, Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. While Shaheed will be out for the season, Olave has been dealing with a concussion sustained in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has suffered four concussions in his football career, including three in the NFL so far in his two and a half years at this level. Here's the full update on his concussion status, as well as information on his status for Week 8.

Update on Chris Olave's injury

According to the Saints' latest injury report, Chris Olave will be available for their Week 8 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, which is a big update considering their lack of depth at the position as of late.

Olave cleared the concussion protocol, which was announced by head coach Dennis Allen on Friday.

How long was Chris Olave out?

Chris Olave missed Week 7 and most of Week 6 due to this concussion as he was hit hard early against the Buccaneers and then missed the next week against the Denver Broncos as it was a short week for “Thursday Night Football.” That was probably for the best, because since this is Olave's third concussion in the NFL and fourth since 2020, it's best to remain cautious and also keep his long-term health in mind when discussing head injuries. He will now return in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers and will have a chance to rejoin the team with rookie Spencer Rattler at the helm.

Saints wide receiver depth chart for Week 8

The current depth chart for the Saints at wide receiver at the start of Week 8 looks a little better with the addition of Chris Olave. They've also made some changes recently, so the current room looks like this:

  • Chris Olave
  • Marquez Valdez-Scantling
  • Bub means
  • Mason Tipton
  • Jermaine Jackson
  • Equanimous St. Brown
  • Injured (missing Week 8): Rashid Shaheed (knee), Cedrick Wilson Jr. (hip)
