Citation for off-roading incident in Big Hole River

FWP game wardens recently issued citations to four people following an off-road incident on the Big Hole River on September 28th.

FWP first became aware of the incident when videos posted online showed people fishing side by side in the Big Hole River at the Salmon Fly Fishing Access Site near Melrose. The incident attracted widespread attention, resulting in several tips from the public that helped guards gather information.

Four people were charged with violating Montana Administrative Code 12.12.115, which prohibits operating a vehicle outside of approved routes. The citation carries a $135 fine.

Signs are posted at the salmon fly fishing access site informing visitors that off-road driving is prohibited at the site. However, many roads and trails throughout Montana may not be signed but still have restrictions. Motorists should be aware that roads and paths may be closed to all or certain types of motorized travel at different times of the year. Contact your local land management agency to find out what restrictions may apply.

Staying on designated roads and trails helps protect resources from erosion, noxious weeds, soil compaction, habitat damage and negative impacts on aquatic and terrestrial wildlife.
