Kyle Shanahan appeared to outsmart 49ers QB Brock Purdy after the loss

SANTA CLARA – Kyle did something strange after the 49ers lost 28-18 to the Chiefs on Sunday.

After his postgame press conference, he went straight to Brock Purdy at his locker and appeared to silently harass him for at least five minutes. Shanahan didn't yell because he obviously didn't want the media to hear what he said, but he waved his arms and pointed his fingers and seemed upset. You didn't have to be an expert in body language to see that he was upset and speaking sternly. Purdy stood up, looked at Shanahan, nodded every few seconds like a good soldier, but didn't say a word. Finally, the two shook hands and Shanahan left.

A few minutes later, Purdy took the podium for his postgame press conference. So I asked him what Shanahan said to him at his locker.

“We talked about just a few things throughout the game and just a few moments and how we can get better and move forward,” Purdy said. “It was really just that.”

It's entirely possible that Shanahan has had constructive conversations about how he and Purdy can improve together.

But that's not what the interaction looked like. By the way Shanahan gestured while speaking, he gave the impression that he was blaming Purdy for his mistakes and essentially blaming him for the loss. Coach him. And he did so in front of Purdy's teammates and members of the media, which might have shifted the responsibility for the terrible loss onto Shanahan's shoulders, considering it belongs to Andy Reid.

Purdy seemed humiliated.

This is why players don't like being called into the locker room by coaches after losses. These conversations should be private.

I wonder how Purdy feels about Shanahan right now.
