Simone Biles responds to criticism of Jonathan Owens' viral interview

Simone Biles isn't biting her tongue over the controversy surrounding an interview with her husband Jonathan Owens.

In the second part of Simone Biles Rising, Premiering on Netflix on Friday, October 25, the 11-time Olympic medalist shared her perspective on the public backlash following Owens' comments The pivotal point podcast last year and said his comments were “taken out of context.”

In the interview, the NFL player was asked if he was the “catch” in his relationship with Biles, to which he replied, “I always say that men are the catch.”

When co-host Channing Crowder asked him how he managed to “draw Simone Biles,” Owens laughed and then said, “Man, she really attracted me like that, man.” That is the question.”

In the episode, Biles is seen laughing off-camera in response to Owens' response, but his opinion sparked a firestorm on social media for the couple.

“Social media exists [followers] “This false sense of reality that they really know who you are and how you function,” Biles, 27, said in the Simone Biles steps up Consequence. “Most of the time they don’t understand the mental toll it takes, especially at the start of an Olympic year.”

The legendary athlete added, “I know we signed up to be judged in the gym, but if you guys talk about him or my family, I'm going to come at you.”

Biles also shared that those who don't know her or Owens personally “equate our love with the amount of trophies, medals and awards that I have, and that's not how you measure love.”

“Most of the time I bite my tongue, but now I have a voice, I've always had a voice,” said the gymnast. “Just because you didn't think I wouldn't see it doesn't mean I don't have an obligation to respond…it's crazy.”

Biles added that she “deleted Twitter” shortly afterward. In real life, the couple gave their own response via Instagram.

After the podcast episode last December, Owens responded to the criticism by posting photos of himself and his wife on their wedding day. In a few more casual shots, he wrote: “Undisturbed 😂❤️ All I know is we locked ourselves in here 🤞🏽.”

In addition to sharing his post on her own Instagram Story, Biles also left a supportive comment on her husband's Grid post.

“🤞🏾💋 for life,” she wrote.
