In November 2023, the cases were reopened and further investigated by the Danbury Police Department Special Victims Unit after contact was made by a female kidnapping and rape victim during that time period.

Investigators said they re-interviewed the people identified by the original investigators and used resources that were not available in the late 1980s.

With assistance from the Danbury District Attorney's Office and the State Police Forensic Laboratory, investigators were able to positively identify Coffey as a suspect. They said he lived in the area in the late 1980s.

An arrest warrant was issued for Coffey. He was charged with first-degree kidnapping.

On Wednesday, Coffey was taken into custody by the Danbury Police Department and charged with a 1989 incident involving the kidnapping and rape of a resident.

He was later taken to Danbury Police Department, where he was held on a court-set bond of $750,000.

Anyone with further information about the cases was asked to contact Danbury police.
