45 cars involved in multiple crashes blocked I-5 south in Kent

All lanes of Interstate 5 (I-5) south in Kent were closed for about three hours on Sunday. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), all lanes have now reopened.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the highway was blocked near 272nd Street due to multiple collisions. WSP Trooper Rick Johnson stated via X that 45 cars were involved. Traffic was diverted to State Route 516.

Johnson said the accidents were caused by speeding, not weather conditions.

“Please slow down!” he wrote on X.

No serious injuries were reported. Johnson said the accidents are being investigated as one collision for documentation purposes.
