“There's a good chance they'll get out soon…” Waco attorney weighs in on Menendez's resentencing

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – In the 1990s, Erik and Lyle Menendez were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for their roles in the murder of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez.

The brothers said they wanted to end the abuse they suffered at the hands of their parents, but recently Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced during a press conference on Thursday that his office was giving the brothers a new prison sentence of 50 years to 20 years would recommend for life.

Waco attorney Vic Feazell, who served as McLennan County district attorney in the 1980s, has been following the case since their arrest and says the brothers may have a chance at freedom.

“They've done so much community service, even while in prison, bringing light to the Me Too movement, not just for women but for men and little boys… I think they'll take all of that into consideration,” Feazell noted.

Feazell says Erik and Lyle Menendez may soon go public if a judge approves their resentencing and the parole board approves their release.

“It could be a long process, they could come out next week, or it could take a year or a year and a half,” Feazell said.

Feazell says that while this case is being tried in California, he would like to see more opportunities to reevaluate new evidence in Texas in hopes of helping those who have been wrongly convicted.

Although the parole hearing date has not yet been set, Feazell says it will be a while before we see a case like hers again.
