Colin Farrell stomped through the city streets to finish the Dublin Marathon – all because of his friendship with Emma Fogarty, Ireland's longest-living person with a rare genetic skin condition.

Farrell, 48, was one of 20,000 runners who took part but ran as part of the 'Team Emma' team, with the actress pushing her wheelchair for the final four kilometers of the race. Each kilometer represented a decade Fogarty lived with epidermolysis bullosa (EB).

“Extraordinary, extraordinary,” is how Farrell described the race to RTÉ News.

Fogarty was diagnosed with EB at birth. According to Cincinnati Children's, this condition, also known as “butterfly skin,” affects one in 50,000 people.

The genetic mutation prevents the skin from forming properly and makes the skin extremely fragile, leading to sores and infections.

The Penguin star and Fogarty have been friends for more than 15 years after meeting at a charity event, and as part of her 40th birthday celebration, Farrell agreed to run the marathon and Fogarty in hers for the final leg of the race Pushing a wheelchair.

“As soon as you turn the corner, there are hundreds or even a few thousand people there. The support out there was incredible because it gave you a little push and actually, all the guards said that too, you walk a little faster than you should.

Farrell insisted the race only came about because of Fogarty's strength.

“It all started with you finding a way to live with EB and not live as a victim of EB,” he said. “As someone who struggles and experiences pain as a result, but not as a victim of it.”

“Even if you suffer, you have a full life that involves more pain than any single person should experience.”

“I am so excited and extremely emotional. As many of you know, I did this because I got the big 4-0 win this year and I wanted to mark that in a big way. But, you – the audience – made it even bigger and more special than ever before.”

She added: “Thank you everyone for your amazing support and donations – in every way. We hope to reach 1 million euros. Please go to Debra.ie to donate.”
