How to Get Paid for Metro Crime Stoppers Tips

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham police have arrested a suspect in the mass shooting in Five Points Southbut no one has received any money for their tips yet.

People are still submitting information about the mass shooting Metro Alabama Crime Stoppers. So far they have collected around 150 tips. Including those on the BPD, investigators are combing through nearly 500 of them.

“The whole idea behind Crime Stoppers is that you remain anonymous and that means no one knows who you are,” said Bob Copus, executive director of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama. “We won’t ask her name. We give them a tip ID number and they say, “From now on, the only notification we want to know is your tip ID number.”

Copus explains that you should keep this ID number handy because it will tell you if you are owed reward funds.

“From there, we forward the tip directly to the appropriate police agency and have that agency analyze the tip, see if they can do something with it, and then they will respond with the tip confirming that that tip was a good one,” he said .

According to Copus, there is an online program that they use to tell you which tip ID numbers will be paid out, and often you don't have to wait long.

Once police confirm which tips helped them in a case, that information goes to the Crime Stoppers board, which then approves the payout.

Some Crime Stoppers agencies across the country require someone to be convicted in order for you to get paid. That is not the case with Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama.

If law enforcement believes that tip was valuable, you can get paid, and if we pay every week, we pay out,” Copus said.

There is still a cash reward of $100,000 available for tips on the mass shooting in Birmingham. Of that, $50,000 will come from Crime Stoppers.

At this point, no one has received any money for their tips in the case.

“At this time, we have not received any notification from Birmingham PD,” Copus stated. “You have to look at a lot and analyze a lot. With their tips and our tips, you're talking about almost 500 tips now, so they still have a lot to go through, so we're very patient. We ask our tipsters to be patient.”

Copus says the only way to save Birmingham is for citizens to take back the city to ensure our streets are safe.
