IIT Bombay students' dance to 'Munni Badnaam' goes viral

A video of students purportedly from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay dancing to Bollywood song 'Munni Badnaam' went massively viral on social media, sparking a debate.

While several users have shared the clip, a post from user @venom1s on X (formerly Twitter) shows a female student performing with others in the background. This has led to mixed reactions, with some calling the performance inappropriate while others find nothing wrong with it.

The clip was not shared on the institute's official social media channels. IIT Bombay has also not issued a statement on the incident.

The controversy stems from differing opinions. Some netizens criticized the performance and questioned whether it was consistent with the image of one of India's most prestigious engineering institutions. One user commented, “People go to IIT to study, then what happens?” Another simply termed it as “inappropriate.” These critics argue that such achievements are inconsistent with the values expected of an academic institution like IIT Bombay.

However, not all answers were negative. Several users defended the students, criticized moral policing and claimed there was nothing wrong with the dance. One user commented, “What's the big deal?” Another remarked, “This just proves that IITians are good at everything,” while others echoed the sentiment and said, “There's nothing wrong with that.”

Recently, IIT Bombay also gained attention for its internship report 2023-24, which showed that 25% of students failed to find jobs through on-campus internships. Despite the high academic requirements and competition, some students received job offers with annual salaries as low as Rs 4 lakh.
